Nix Cream Rinse Lice Treatment
The Cream Rinse should be used after the hair has been washed with your normal shampoo, rinsed thoroughly and towel dried. Enough should be used to saturate the hair and scalp, paying close attention to the nape of the neck and behind the ears. Leave the cream rinse on your hair for no longer than 10 minutes, then rinse with water. All lice and their unhatched eggs should be killed after only one application. If live lice are noticed 7 days or more after the first treatment, a second treatment should be done. To properly deal with head lice, a nit comb should be used to remove all nits present.
General Tips
- Check every member of your household for nits and lice. Be sure to treat every case of lice discovered in the household. Do not treat anyone who does not have nits or lice in their hair.
- Notify the child's school and/or day care provider that your child has lice.
Combing Tips
- Allow enough time for thorough combing. Depending on hair length, it could take nearly an hour to complete properly.
- Place a towel between the hair and shoulders of the person being treated.
- Separate the hair in to four sections using hair clips to secure them in place in preparation for combing.
- Start with a 1 inch square area of hair in first section and begin combing the hair from the scalp to the ends of the strands in one complete motion.
- Dip the comb in hot water and wipe clean with a paper towel after each comb through.
- If any nits remain on the strands, comb through again.
- Simply continue combing until all of the sections have been completed.
- Once completed, wash the clothing the treated person was wearing and the towel and comb used according to the directions below. Also wash your hands thoroughly.
Household Care
- All personal headgear, scarf's, coats, and bed linen should be disinfected by machine washing in hot water and drying, using the hot cycle of a dryer for at least 20 minutes.
- Personal articles of clothing or bedding that cannot be washed may be dry-cleaned, sealed in a plastic bag for a period of about 2 weeks, or sprayed with a product specifically designed for this purpose.
- Personal combs and brushes may be disinfected by soaking in hot water (above 130F) for 5 to 10 minutes.
- Thorough vacuuming of rooms inhabited by infected patients is recommended.
Prevention of Future Outbreaks
- Check your child's hair on a weekly basis for nits and lice
- Treat all cases immediately upon discovery of nits or lice
- Do not share clothing, towels, bedding, hats, combs, brushes, etc.
- Be sure to keep individual people's clothing and bedding separate while stored in dressers, closets, etc.
- Shower caps or liners can be used when children are required to share helmets/headgear.
