| General Tips |
|
|
 |
1. Check every member of your household for nits and lice. Be
sure to treat every case of lice discovered in the
household. Do not treat anyone who does not have nits or
lice in their hair. |
|
|
 |
2. Notify the child's school and/or day care provider that your
child has lice. |
|
|
Combing Tips
Allow enough time for thorough combing. Depending on hair
length, it could take nearly an hour to complete properly. |
|
|
 |
3. Place a towel between the hair and shoulders of the person being
treated. |
|
|
 |
4. Separate the hair in to four sections using hair clips to secure
them in place in preparation for combing. |
|
|
 |
5. Start with a 1 inch square area of hair in first section and
begin combing the hair from the scalp to the ends of the strands
in one complete motion. |
|
|
 |
6. Dip the comb in hot water and wipe clean with a paper towel
after each comb through. |
|
|
 |
7. If any nits remain on the strands, comb through again. |
|
|
 |
8. Simply continue combing until all of the sections have been
completed. |
|
|
 |
9. Once completed, wash the clothing the treated person was wearing
and the towel and comb used according to the directions
below. Also wash your hands thoroughly. |

|
| Household Care |
|
|
 |
1. All personal headgear, scarf's, coats, and bed linen should be disinfected by machine washing in hot water and drying, using the hot cycle of a dryer for at least 20 minutes. |
|
|
 |
2. Personal articles of clothing or bedding that cannot be washed may be dry-cleaned, sealed in a plastic bag for a period of about 2 weeks, or sprayed
with a product specifically designed for this purpose, such as Nix Lice Control Spray. |
|
|
 |
3. Personal combs and brushes may be disinfected by soaking in hot water (above 130F) for 5 to 10 minutes. |
|
|
 |
4. Thorough vacuuming of rooms inhabited by infected patients is recommended. |
|
|
|
Prevention of Future Outbreaks |
|
|
 |
1. Check your child's hair on a weekly basis for nits and lice |
|
|
 |
2. Treat all cases immediately upon discovery of nits or lice |
|
|
 |
3. Do not share clothing, towels, bedding, hats, combs, brushes,
etc. |
|
|
 |
4. Be sure to keep individual people's clothing and bedding
separate while stored in dressers, closets, etc. |
|
|
 |
5. Shower caps or liners can be used when children are required to
share helmets/headgear. |

Household Tips
|
|
|
|
|
1. Mites can survive on almost any type of surface for two to three days. Therefore, all areas must be vacuumed and washed thoroughly, including table tops, counters, linens, and toys.
|
|
|
|
|
2. All recently worn clothing (including underwear, pajamas, and hats), used sheets, pillowcases, and towels should be washed in very hot water or dry-cleaned.
|
|
|
|
|
3. Any difficult to clean items should be sealed in bags for a week.
|
|
|
|
|
Prevention of Future Outbreaks
|
|
|
|
|
1. The easiest way to prevent future outbreaks is to carefully follow the instructions for use of Nix Dermal Cream and to complete the activities described above.

|
|
|
|
2. Also, you should be sure to treat all infected persons in you household in order to further prevent reinfestation.
